Passage in Time: Art In the Public Space
Meet me in Saint John
Saint John 225 issues nation-wide call for signature sculptural pIece to commemorate Saint John and its anniversary as Canada's Original City
A nation-wide call to artists has been issued by the City of Saint John to create a major sculptural piece to commemorate the city's 225th anniversary and its place in Canadian history as the country's original city.
The working title is 'The Meeting Place/Le rassemblement' and its purpose is to celebrate the area's traditional role as a place where people and cultures have gathered for centuries.
Total value of this contract is $200,000, including artist fees and supplies.
Saint John is located around a natural harbour, formed at the confluence of the St. John River and the Bay of Fundy, home to the world's highest tides.
The river and the bay form a natural transportation route and this area has been a meeting place of people and cultures for centuries.
Artists from across Canada have until June 24th, 2010 to design and submit a proposal for the development, creation, delivery and installation of a permanent piece of public artwork. A jury will consider each of the submissions and a short list of up to three artists may then be invited to create maquettes (small-scale model) to complete the selection process.
The successful artist will be announced in autumn 2010.
The completed work will be prominently displayed along Harbour Passage, a three-kilometre walking/biking path that encircles Saint John's natural harbour and connects waterfront parks, recreation spaces and heritage sites.
This project is a continuation of the City of Saint John's successful One Percent for Arts program, which encourages public sector capital projects to set aside one per cent of capital costs for a public art installation. To date three pieces have been commissioned and installed, two at the headquarters for Saint John Energy and one piece outside Saint John Transit's new terminal.
