First Nations Festival
In September 2010 we'll celebrate the cultures of the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and the Mi'kmaq, First Nations of the Maritimes.
Saint John is where the river meets the sea, creating a natural harbour.
The Wolastoqiyik take their name from the river - known to them as Wolastoq, which means beautiful river.
The river and the bay form a natural transportation route and this area has been a meeting place of people and cultures for centuries.
The Wolastoqiyik maintained a village on the west side of the harbour, where they would trade with other First Nations and in 1604 greet Samuel de Champlain.
Join us in September 2010 for a celebration of Aboriginal arts, culture and heritage.
