The Saint John 225 Speaker's Series
Arts and Culture enriches all of our lives. It shapes our economy, identity and every day life.
Through a series of dynamic speakers, and a highly engaging panel discussion, the Cultural Capitals 2010 Speaker Series will discuss the importance of Arts and Culture on the life and economy of the community.
Simon Brault, Author of No Culture, No Future
Simon Brault is Vice-Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts and CEO of the National Theatre School of Canada. He was also the driving force behind Rendez-Vous, a group that brought together political and cultural communities in Montreal in 2007. He has spent his professional life promoting and, all too frequently, defending the arts, which he demonstrates in No Culture, No Future. In this English-language translation of his highly-acclaimed book Le Facteur C: l, Brault argues that the arts and culture are an essential part of everyday life. Participation in the arts can take the form of attending a concert, reading a book, taking lessons, or being part of the chorus for an opera. Culture, Brault believes, is activity. Arts are not just for art's sake, but for the good of the populace - it's a democratic activity.
